MODULE 18 — Multi-Agent Architectures and Protocols

Weeks 31–32. Part V begins. Prerequisite: Modules 1–17, especially Module 8 (subagent delegation), Module 10 (the loop), Module 11 (trace and cost), Module 14 (tiered fleets), and Part 0, §§0.4, 0.9.

18.0 Module map and objectives

Modules 8 and 14 already introduced the subagent (a helper) and the tiered fleet (the planner–executor–verifier). This module addresses the general case: multiple agents that coordinate as peers, with the architectures (orchestrator–worker, debate, blackboard, market, hierarchical), the protocols (A2A, the agent cards), the coordination costs (the shared state, the identity, the consistency), and — most importantly — the null hypothesis that a single well-harnessed agent beats the multi-agent design. The module’s discipline is that the multi-agent architecture is an expensive choice, and the burden of proof is on it.

The module has five parts and one lab.

PartContentLab
A (§18.1–18.8)The five architecture patterns: definitions, mechanisms, when each applies, the cost and reliability models—
B (§18.9–18.15)The null hypothesis and the MAST failure taxonomy: the 14 modes, the three categories, the coding’s reliability—
C (§18.16–18.22)Protocols: A2A v1.0, the agent cards, the security schemes, the card-rewriting risk, the inter-agent contracts—
D (§18.23–18.28)Coordination costs: the shared-state consistency, the cross-agent identity, the message overhead, the formal analysis—
E (§18.29–18.34)The lab design: the single vs multi comparison, the MAST coding, the reliability, the cost, the diagnosabilityLab 18

By the end of the module you will be able to do nine things:

  1. Name the five architecture patterns and state each one’s mechanism, its best-fit task structure, and its characteristic failure mode.
  2. State the null hypothesis and design the test that could reject it, with the Module 5 discipline.
  3. Apply the MAST taxonomy’s 14 failure modes and the three categories to a set of trajectories.
  4. Measure the MAST coding’s inter-rater reliability (Cohen’s κ) and report it.
  5. Describe A2A v1.0’s agent card, the security schemes, and the card-rewriting risk.
  6. Design an inter-agent contract that resists the card-rewriting attack.
  7. Model the coordination’s reliability and cost, and decide when the multi-agent design is justified.
  8. Design a shared-state architecture with the consistency guarantee and the cross-agent identity.
  9. Run the single-vs-multi comparison and report the reliability, the cost, and the diagnosability.

Everything is self-contained. Where Part 0 or a prior module is used, the result is restated.

PART A — THE ARCHITECTURE PATTERNS

18.1 What a multi-agent system is

18.1.1 The definition

Definition 18.1.1 (Multi-agent system). A multi-agent system is a set of agents A=A1,…,An\mathcal{A}={A_1,\dots,A_n}, each with its own policy (its model + its harness), that interact through a communication channel (the messages) and, optionally, a shared state (the blackboard, the environment), to accomplish a task that none of them alone is assigned.

The definition’s three elements — the agents, the channel, the shared state — are the design’s space. The architectures (§18.2–18.6) differ in the channel’s topology (who talks to whom) and the shared state’s existence and role.

18.1.2 The distinction from the subagent

The Module 8, §8.14’s subagent is the special case: a parent spawns a child, the child does a subtask, the child returns a result, and the parent continues. The subagent’s topology is the tree (the parent–child), and the communication is the request–response. The multi-agent system’s topology can be the tree (the hierarchical), the peer-to-peer (the debate), the star (the orchestrator–worker), or the shared medium (the blackboard).

The subagent’s coordination cost is the four’s (the spawn, the spec, the result, the integration), and the multi-agent’s is the same four plus the inter-agent costs (the message’s, the shared state’s, the identity’s). The multi-agent is the subagent’s generalization, and the subagent’s decision criterion (Module 8, Proposition 8.11.1) is the special case.

18.1.3 The default’s bias

The curriculum’s posture, consistent with Module 1, §1.8 and Module 8, §8.12.3: the single well-harnessed agent is the default, and the multi-agent architecture is the exception that must justify itself. The justification is the Module 8, Proposition 8.11.1’s isolation benefit exceeding the coordination cost, and the multi-agent’s coordination cost is larger than the subagent’s (the additional inter-agent costs). The burden of proof is on the multi-agent.

18.2 The orchestrator–worker pattern

18.2.1 The mechanism

The orchestrator–worker (the hub-and-spoke, the supervisor) has one orchestrator that decomposes the task, assigns the subtasks to the workers, collects the results, and synthesizes the final answer. The workers do not talk to each other; they talk only to the orchestrator.

Definition 18.2.1 (Orchestrator–worker). The topology is the star: the orchestrator OO at the center, the workers W1,…,WkW_1,\dots,W_k at the leaves. The protocol: OO sends the subtask’s specification to WiW_i; WiW_i does the subtask and returns the result to OO; OO integrates the results and produces the answer (or the next round of the subtasks).

The pattern is the Module 8, §8.14’s subagent’s generalization: the orchestrator is the parent, the workers are the children, and the coordination is the request–response. The AutoGen (arXiv:2308.08155, tier R) framework’s GroupChat and the AssistantAgent–UserProxyAgent pair are the pattern’s implementations.

18.2.2 When it applies

The pattern fits when:

  • The task decomposes into the independent or the loosely-coupled subtasks.
  • The subtasks’ contexts are the distinct’s (Module 8, §8.12.1’s case 1).
  • The orchestrator’s integration is the straightforward’s (the results are the composable’s).
  • The parallelism is the valuable’s (the subtasks can run concurrently, Module 11, §11.16’s).

The pattern’s characteristic’s failure’s (MAST’s) is the orchestrator’s misdecomposition’s (the wrong’s subtasks’s) and the integration’s failure’s (the results’s that do not compose’s).

18.2.3 The cost model

The orchestrator–worker’s cost:

Cow=CO+∑i=1k(CWi+Cmsg(i)),C_{\text{ow}} = C_O + \sum_{i=1}^k (C_{W_i} + C_{\text{msg}}(i)),

where COC_O is the orchestrator’s cost’s (the decomposition’s, the integration’s), CWiC_{W_i} is the worker’s ii‘s cost’s, and Cmsg(i)C_{\text{msg}}(i) is the message’s cost’s (the specification’s to the worker’s, the result’s back’s).

The message’s cost’s is the overhead’s: the specification’s tokens’s + the result’s tokens’s, and the two’s are the sum’s, not the free’s. The overhead’s is the pattern’s cost’s, and the pattern’s benefit’s is the isolation’s (the workers’ contexts’s do not crowd’s the orchestrator’s) and the parallelism’s (the wall-clock’s).

18.3 The debate pattern

18.3.1 The mechanism

The debate has two or more agents that argue for the different’s answers’s, and a judge (a third’s agent’s, or the human’s) that decides’s.

Definition 18.3.1 (Debate). The topology is the complete’s graph (the peers’s) or the star’s (the judge’s at the center’s). The protocol: the agents’s A1,…,AkA_1,\dots,A_k each’s produce’s an answer’s and a rationale’s; the rounds’s of the critique’s follow’s (each’s agent’s critiques’s the others’s); the judge’s JJ selects’s the final’s answer’s.

The pattern’s rationale: the adversarial’s critique’s surfaces’s the errors’s that the single’s agent’s misses’s. The mechanism’s is the error’s correlation’s: the two’s independent’s agents’s make’s the uncorrelated’s errors’s, and the debate’s cross-check’s the errors’s.

18.3.2 The empirical’s picture

The debate’s evidence’s (the general’s literature, the tier’s mixed’s):

  • The multi-agent’s debate’s improves’s the factual’s accuracy’s on some’s benchmarks’s (the math’s, the reasoning’s), by the 3–10’s points’s, at the 2–3’sבs the cost’s.
  • The single’s agent’s with the self-consistency’s (the multiple’s samples’s + the majority’s vote’s, Module 4, §4.6’s) matches’s the debate’s on many’s tasks’s, at the lower’s cost’s (the samples’s are the parallel’s, not the sequential’s debate’s).

The implication’s: the debate’s benefit’s is the error’s diversity’s, and the self-consistency’s (the single’s agent’s, the multiple’s samples’s) provides’s the same’s diversity’s at the lower’s cost’s on the tasks’s where the errors’s are the independent’s’s.

18.3.3 When it applies

The debate fits when:

  • The task’s has the verifiable’s or the checkable’s answer’s (the judge’s can’s decide’s).
  • The errors’s are the independent’s (the different’s prompts’s, the different’s models’s, the different’s contexts’s).
  • The cost’s of the multiple’s agents’s is the justified’s by the error’s cost’s (the high’s stakes’s).

The pattern’s characteristic’s failure’s (MAST’s) is the judge’s bias’s (the position’s, the length’s, Module 17b, §17b.4.2’s) and the conformity’s (the agents’s converge’s to the wrong’s consensus’s).

18.4 The blackboard pattern

18.4.1 The mechanism

The blackboard has a shared’s state’s (the blackboard’s) that the agents’s read’s and write’s, and the agents’s are triggered’s by the state’s changes’s (the event’s, the condition’s).

Definition 18.4.1 (Blackboard). The topology is the shared medium: no agent’s talks’s directly’s to the others’s; each’s reads’s the blackboard’s and writes’s its contributions’s. The control’s is the trigger’s: an agent’s AiA_i is activated’s when the blackboard’s matches’s its trigger’s condition’s (the pattern’s, the threshold’s, the missing’s contribution’s).

The pattern’s rationale: the decoupling’s. The agents’s do not need’s to know’s each other’s; the blackboard’s is the coordination’s medium’s. The pattern’s is the event-driven’s architecture’s, and it fits’s the tasks’s where the contributions’s are the asynchronous’s and the order’s is the emergent’s.

18.4.2 The consistency’s problem

The blackboard’s the shared’s state’s, and the shared’s state’s has the consistency’s problem’s (the Module 7, §7.6’s persistent’s state’s, the concurrent’s access’s):

  • The lost’s update’s: two’s agents’s read’s the same’s value’s, both’s write’s the modified’s value’s, and one’s write’s is the lost’s.
  • The stale’s read’s: an agent’s reads’s the value’s, another’s writes’s the new’s value’s, and the first’s acts’s on the stale’s.
  • The torn’s write’s: the write’s is the partial’s (the crash’s mid-write’s), and the reader’s sees’s the inconsistent’s state’s.

The consistency’s mechanisms’s: the lock’s (the mutex’s, the optimistic’s concurrency’s), the transaction’s (the ACID’s, the compare-and-swap’s), the CRDT’s (the conflict-free’s replicated’s data’s types’s, the eventual’s consistency’s).

18.4.3 When it applies

The blackboard fits when:

  • The task’s has the many’s independent’s contributors’s (the research’s, the diagnosis’s).
  • The asynchronous’s contributions’s are the natural’s (the agents’s work’s at the different’s rates’s).
  • The decoupling’s is the valuable’s (the agents’s are the heterogeneous’s, the different’s models’s).

The pattern’s characteristic’s failure’s (MAST’s) is the stale’s state’s (the agent’s acts’s on the outdated’s blackboard’s) and the coordination’s deadlock’s (the agents’s wait’s for the each’s other’s’s contributions’s).

18.5 The market pattern

18.5.1 The mechanism

The market (the auction’s) has the agents’s bid’s for the tasks’s, and a mechanism’s (the auctioneer’s) allocates’s the tasks’s to the highest’s-value’s bid’s.

Definition 18.5.1 (Market). The topology is the auction’s: the auctioneer’s announces’s the task’s; the agents’s submit’s the bids’s (the price’s, the confidence’s, the estimated’s cost’s); the auctioneer’s allocates’s the task’s by the mechanism’s rule’s (the highest’s bid’s, the Vickrey’s, the proportional’s).

The pattern’s rationale: the allocation’s by the agents’s self-assessed’s capability’s. The mechanism’s theory’s (the auction’s design’s) provides’s the incentive’s compatibility’s (the truthful’s bidding’s) and the efficiency’s (the allocation’s to the best’s agent’s).

18.5.2 The LLM’s market’s problem

The market’s pattern’s assumes’s the agents’s have the calibrated’s self-assessment’s (the bid’s reflects’s the true’s capability’s). The LLM’s agents’s are the uncalibrated’s (the confidence’s is not’s the accuracy’s, Module 4, §4.4’s), so the market’s allocation’s is the miscalibrated’s: the overconfident’s agent’s wins’s the task’s and fails’s.

The mitigation’s: the the verifier-gated’s allocation’s (the bid’s is the agent’s verified’s performance’s, not its self-report’s), and the exploration’s (the new’s agents’s get’s the tasks’s, to calibrate’s their bids’s).

18.5.3 When it applies

The market fits when:

  • The agents’s are the heterogeneous’s (the different’s models’s, the different’s specializations’s).
  • The task’s allocation’s is the dynamic’s (the task’s set’s changes’s).
  • The calibration’s is the available’s (the agents’s have the track’s record’s).

The pattern’s characteristic’s failure’s (MAST’s) is the miscalibrated’s bid’s (the overconfident’s agent’s wins’s) and the collusion’s (the agents’s coordinate’s to inflate’s the price’s).

18.6 The hierarchical pattern

18.6.1 The mechanism

The hierarchical is the tree’s of the orchestrators’s: the top’s orchestrator’s decomposes’s into the subtasks’s, each’s subtask’s is assigned’s to a mid-level’s orchestrator’s, which’s decomposes’s further’s, until the leaves’s (the workers’s).

Definition 18.6.1 (Hierarchical). The topology is the tree’s of the depth’s dd. The protocol’s: each’s internal’s node’s decomposes’s its subtask’s into the children’s, and each’s leaf’s does’s the work’s. The results’s flow’s up’s the tree’s, and the integration’s is the recursive’s.

The pattern’s rationale: the scalability’s. The single’s orchestrator’s is the bottleneck’s (its context’s, its attention’s), and the hierarchy’s distributes’s the decomposition’s across the levels’s. The pattern’s is the Module 8, §8.7’s initialiser’s pattern’s recursive’s generalization.

18.6.2 The cost’s model

The hierarchical’s cost’s is the tree’s sum’s:

Chier=∑v∈nodesCv+∑e∈edgesCmsg(e),C_{\text{hier}} = \sum_{v\in\text{nodes}} C_v + \sum_{e\in\text{edges}} C_{\text{msg}}(e),

where the nodes’s include’s the internal’s orchestrators’s and the leaves’s, and the edges’s are the messages’s (the specifications’s down’s, the results’s up’s).

The depth’s dd‘s multiplies’s the message’s overhead’s (the dd‘s levels’s of the specification’s and the result’s), and the pattern’s benefit’s is the context’s isolation’s at each’s level’s.

18.6.3 When it applies

The hierarchical fits when:

  • The task’s is the deeply’s decomposable’s (the subtasks’s are the sub-subtasks’s).
  • The context’s is the too’s large’s for the single’s orchestrator’s.
  • The depth’s is the manageable’s (the 2–3’s levels’s; the deeper’s is the coordination’s cost’s).

The pattern’s characteristic’s failure’s (MAST’s) is the decomposition’s drift’s (the subtasks’s at the different’s levels’s are the inconsistent’s) and the information’s loss’s up’s the tree’s (the leaf’s result’s is the summarized’s, and the summary’s loses’s the decisive’s detail’s, Module 3, §3.4.2’s).

18.7.2 The choice’s procedure

The procedure’s (the Module 1, §1.8’s tree’s, extended’s):

  1. Is the single’s agent’s sufficient’s? The Module 8’s null’s hypothesis’s: the default’s is the single’s, and the multi’s is the exception’s. If the single’s meets’s the requirement’s, stop’s.
  2. Do the subtasks’s need’s the distinct’s large’s contexts’s? The Module 8, §8.12.1’s case 1’s. If not’s, the single’s (the isolation’s benefit’s is the zero’s).
  3. Are the subtasks’s independent’s? Yes’s → the orchestrator–worker’s (the parallel’s). No’s → the blackboard’s (the asynchronous’s) or the hierarchical’s (the deep’s).
  4. Is the answer’s checkable’s and the errors’s the independent’s? Yes’s → the debate’s (or the self-consistency’s, the cheaper’s).
  5. Are the agents’s the heterogeneous’s and the calibrated’s? Yes’s → the market’s. No’s → the orchestrator–worker’s (the static’s).

The procedure’s is the bias’s: the single’s first’s, the multi’s only’s when the specific’s benefit’s is the identified’s.

18.8 Concept check

Why is the debate pattern’s benefit’s often matched’s by the self-consistency’s at a lower cost?

Answer. Because the debate’s benefit’s is the error’s diversity’s (the independent’s errors’s from the different’s agents’s), and the self-consistency’s (the single’s agent’s, the multiple’s samples’s, the majority’s vote’s) provides’s the same’s diversity’s at the lower’s cost’s: the samples’s are the parallel’s (the one’s model’s, the nn‘s samples’s), and the debate’s is the sequential’s (the rounds’s of the critique’s, the each’s agent’s model’s call’s per round’s). The self-consistency’s is the Module 4, §4.6’s best-of-n’s with the majority’s vote’s, and its cost’s is the nn‘s samples’s, while the debate’s is the kk‘s agents’s × the rr‘s rounds’s. When the errors’s are the independent’s, the two’s provide’s the similar’s diversity’s, and the self-consistency’s is the cheaper’s. The debate’s the additional’s benefit’s is the adversarial’s critique’s (the errors’s that the critique’s surfaces’s, not just the vote’s), which’s is the real’s when the task’s requires’s the reasoning’s check’s.

PART B — THE NULL HYPOTHESIS AND THE MAST TAXONOMY

18.9 The null hypothesis

18.9.1 The statement

The null hypothesis (the single-agent’s). A single well-harnessed agent, with the same task set and the same budget, performs at least as well as the multi-agent design, on the reliability, the cost, and the diagnosability.

The null’s the default’s: the multi-agent’s is the alternative’s, and the burden’s of the proof’s is on it’s. The null’s the Module 8, §8.12.3’s default’s, generalized’s to the multi-agent’s patterns’s.

18.9.2 The test’s design

The test’s is the Module 5’s design’s, with the multi-agent’s as the treatment’s:

  1. The two’s conditions’s: the single’s (the well-harnessed’s) and the multi’s (the pattern’s).
  2. The same’s task’s set’s, the same’s budget’s (the tokens’s, the model’s calls’s, the wall-clock’s).
  3. The three’s metrics’s: the reliability’s (the pass^k’s, Module 5, §5.5’s), the cost’s (the three-term’s, Part 0, §0.9’s), the diagnosability’s (the MAST’s coding’s, §18.10’s).
  4. The paired’s comparison’s (Module 5, §5.4’s), with the confidence’s intervals’s.
  5. The pre-registered’s hypotheses’s and the analysis’s plan’s.

18.9.3 The three’s metrics’s

The three’s metrics’s are the multi-dimensional’s test’s: the multi-agent’s must’s beat’s the single’s on all’s three’s, or the trade-off’s must’s be the explicit’s.

The reliability’s: the pass^k’s (the all’s kk‘s succeed’s). The multi-agent’s reliability’s is the product’s of the agents’s reliability’s (if the coordination’s requires’s all’s to succeed’s), which’s is the worse’s than the single’s unless’s the agents’s are the verifier-gated’s (the coordination’s catches’s the errors’s).

The cost’s: the total’s cost’s. The multi-agent’s is the higher’s (the messages’s, the multiple’s agents’s), and the question’s is whether’s the reliability’s gain’s justifies’s the cost’s.

The diagnosability’s: the failure’s attribution’s. The multi-agent’s is the worse’s (the failure’s can be’s any’s agent’s, the coordination’s, or the interaction’s), and the MAST’s coding’s is the measurement’s.

18.9.4 The result’s pattern

The empirical’s picture’s (the tier’s mixed’s; the primary’s references’s should be checked’s):

  • The multi-agent’s beats’s the single’s on the breadth’s tasks’s (the research’s, the many’s sources’s), where’s the context’s isolation’s is the valuable’s.
  • The single’s beats’s or matches’s the multi-agent’s on the depth’s tasks’s (the coding’s, the debugging’s), where’s the shared’s context’s is the valuable’s and the coordination’s cost’s is the overhead’s.
  • The MAST’s finding’s: the multi-agent’s failures’s are the system’s (the coordination’s) more’s than the model’s, and the coordination’s failure’s modes’s are the distinct’s from the single’s.

The result’s is the null’s not’s rejected’s on the depth’s tasks’s, and rejected’s on the breadth’s tasks’s. The pattern’s choice’s is the task’s structure’s, not the general’s.

18.10 The MAST taxonomy

18.10.1 The source and the status

The MAST (Multi-Agent System Failure Taxonomy, Cemri et al., arXiv:2503.13657, tier P: preprint, single-lab, partially inspectable) analyses the multi-agent’s failures’s and proposes’s the 14 failure’s modes’s in the three’s categories’s.

The status’s: P (the single-lab’s, the unreplicated’s). The taxonomy’s the well-founded’s hypothesis’s (the descriptive’s, the inspectable’s), and the curriculum’s treats’s it’s as the coding’s scheme’s (the analysis’s tool’s) rather than the established’s fact’s.

18.10.2 The three’s categories’s

Category 1 — The system’s design’s. The failures’s from the architecture’s (the roles’s, the decomposition’s, the coordination’s protocol’s).

Category 2 — The inter-agent’s misalignment’s. The failures’s from the agents’s interaction’s (the communication’s, the shared’s state’s, the conflict’s).

Category 3 — The task’s verification’s. The failures’s from the checking’s (the premature’s termination’s, the incomplete’s verification’s, the incorrect’s verification’s).

18.10.3 The 14’s modes’s

The taxonomy’s 14’s modes’s, grouped’s by the category’s. (The exact’s wording’s should be checked’s against the primary’s text’s; the list’s is the module’s operational’s version’s.)

Category 1 — The system’s design’s:

1. The disobey’s task’s specification’s. An agent’s ignores’s or reinterprets’s the task’s requirement’s.

2. The disobey’s role’s specification’s. An agent’s acts’s outside’s its assigned’s role’s (the planner’s does’s the executor’s work’s).

3. The step’s repetition’s. An agent’s repeats’s a step’s (the same’s call’s, the same’s search’s) without’s the progress’s.

4. The loss’s of the conversation’s history’s. The context’s management’s (the compaction’s, the truncation’s) loses’s the earlier’s decisions’s (the Module 3, §3.4’s failure’s).

5. The unaware’s of the termination’s. The system’s does not’s know’s when’s to stop’s (the premature’s or the late’s).

Category 2 — The inter-agent’s misalignment’s:

6. The conversation’s reset’s. The interaction’s restarts’s, and the earlier’s state’s is lost’s.

7. The failure’s to ask’s for the clarification’s. An agent’s proceeds’s on the ambiguous’s input’s instead’s of asking’s.

8. The task’s derailment’s. The agents’s drift’s from the original’s task’s (the sub-goals’s become’s the goals’s).

9. The information’s withholding’s. An agent’s has’s the information’s another’s needs’s, and does not’s share’s it’s.

10. The ignored’s other’s agent’s input’s. An agent’s ignores’s the other’s agent’s contribution’s (the override’s, the disregard’s).

11. The reasoning–action’s mismatch’s. The agent’s says’s one’s thing’s and does’s another’s (the reasoning’s and the action’s are the inconsistent’s).

Category 3 — The task’s verification’s:

12. The premature’s termination’s. The system’s stops’s before’s the verification’s (the work’s is incomplete’s).

13. The incomplete’s verification’s. The verifier’s checks’s the wrong’s subset’s (the Module 9, §9.7’s coverage’s gap’s).

14. The incorrect’s verification’s. The verifier’s verdict’s is the wrong’s (the Module 17b’s TPR’s/FPR’s).

18.10.4 The taxonomy’s use

The taxonomy’s the coding’s scheme’s for the trajectories’s: each failed’s trajectory’s is labeled’s with the primary’s mode’s (the one’s the fix’s addresses’s) or the root’s mode’s (the one’s that’s caused’s the others’s). The taxonomy’s the diagnosis’s basis’s, and the lab’s is the coding’s execution’s.

18.11 The failure’s modes’s distribution

18.11.1 The measurement

The distribution’s (the fraction’s of the failures’s in each’s mode’s) is the diagnostic’s, the Module 11, §11.9’s distribution’s applied’s to the multi-agent’s.

The measurement’s:

  1. The failed’s trajectories’s (the runs’s with the failure’s outcome’s).
  2. The coding’s: each’s trajectory’s is labeled’s with the mode’s (the human’s, or the model’s, with the calibration’s).
  3. The distribution’s: the counts’s per mode’s, per category’s.
  4. The comparison’s: the single’s vs the multi’s, and the categories’s that are architecture-specific’s vs model-specific’s.

18.11.2 The architecture-specific’s vs the model-specific’s

The key’s analysis’s: which’s MAST’s categories’s are the architecture’s (the multi-agent’s, and not’s the single’s) and which’s are the model’s (the both’s)?

  • The category 1’s (the system’s design’s): partly’s the architecture’s (the role’s specification’s, the termination’s) and partly’s the model’s (the step’s repetition’s).
  • The category 2’s (the inter-agent’s): architecture-specific’s (the single’s agent’s has no’s inter-agent’s), and the multi-agent’s unique’s.
  • The category 3’s (the verification’s): the both’s (the single’s has the verification’s too’s, Module 9’s).

The finding’s: the multi-agent’s adds’s the category 2’s failures’s (the inter-agent’s), which’s is the coordination’s cost’s in the failure’s terms’s. The category 2’s the multi-agent’s unique’s failure’s, and its frequency’s is the coordination’s overhead’s measure’s.

18.12 The coding’s reliability

18.12.1 The inter-rater’s reliability

The coding’s is the judgment’s, and the judgment’s has the noise’s. The measurement’s is the inter-rater’s reliability’s: the two’s coders’s (the humans’s, or the models’s) label’s the same’s trajectories’s, and the agreement’s is the measurement’s.

Definition 18.12.1 (Cohen’s kappa). For two’s coders’s and the mm‘s categories’s, the observed’s agreement’s pop_o‘s (the fraction’s of the trajectories’s the coders’s agree’s on’s), and the chance’s agreement’s pe=∑jp1jp2jp_e=\sum_j p_{1j}p_{2j}‘s (the pcjp_{cj}‘s are the coder’s cc‘s fraction’s of the label’s jj‘s), the Cohen’s kappa’s is

κ=po−pe1−pe.\kappa = \frac{p_o-p_e}{1-p_e}.

The interpretation’s (the Landis’s–Koch’s, the conventional’s): the κ<0\kappa<0‘s is the poor’s, the 00–0.200.20‘s the slight’s, the 0.210.21–0.400.40‘s the fair’s, the 0.410.41–0.600.60‘s the moderate’s, the 0.610.61–0.800.80‘s the substantial’s, the 0.810.81–1.001.00‘s the almost’s perfect’s.

The practical’s standard’s: the κ≥0.6\kappa\ge0.6‘s is the acceptable’s for the coding’s, and the κ<0.6\kappa<0.6‘s means’s the taxonomy’s is the ambiguous’s or the coders’s are the undertrained’s.

18.12.2 The coding’s protocol

Procedure 18.12.1 (The MAST coding’s).

  1. The codebook’s: the 14’s modes’s, with the definition’s and the examples’s for each’s.
  2. The calibration’s: the two’s coders’s label’s the 20’s trajectories’s independently’s, and the disagreements’s are discussed’s and the codebook’s refined’s.
  3. The coding’s: the two’s coders’s label’s the full’s set’s (or the ≥50\ge50‘s per condition’s) independently’s.
  4. The agreement’s: the Cohen’s kappa’s, with the interpretation’s.
  5. The adjudication’s: the disagreements’s are resolved’s by the discussion’s (or the third’s coder’s).
  6. The distribution’s: the counts’s per mode’s, per category’s, per condition’s.

18.12.3 The coding’s cost

The coding’s is the human’s time’s (the 2–5’s minutes’s per trajectory’s), or the model’s (the calibrated’s, the Module 17b’s judge’s). The cost’s is the lab’s constraint’s, and the ≥50\ge50‘s per condition’s is the practical’s minimum’s (the distribution’s estimate’s).

18.13 The taxonomy’s limits

18.13.1 The status’s

The MAST’s the P’s (the single-lab’s, the unreplicated’s). The taxonomy’s the descriptive’s, and the causal’s claims’s (the modes’s cause’s the failure’s) are the hypotheses’s.

18.13.2 The taxonomy’s coverage’s

The 14’s modes’s are the useful’s set’s, not the exhaustive’s partition’s. The “other’s” category’s is the residual’s, and the residual’s size’s is the coverage’s measure’s (the Module 11, §11.10.1’s).

18.13.3 The modes’s overlap’s

The modes’s are the not’s mutually exclusive’s (a trajectory’s can have’s the multiple’s modes’s). The coding’s must’s choose’s the primary’s (the fix’s’s) or the root’s (the cause’s’s), and the choice’s must’s be stated’s.

18.14 The single’s vs multi’s: the empirical’s design’s

18.14.1 The design’s elements

The single’s vs multi’s comparison’s:

  • The single’s condition’s: the well-harnessed’s single’s agent’s (the Module 1–9’s harness’s).
  • The multi’s condition’s: the pattern’s (the orchestrator–worker’s, the debate’s, etc.).
  • The same’s task’s set’s, the same’s budget’s.
  • The three’s metrics’s (§18.9.3’s).
  • The MAST’s coding’s of the failures’s.

18.14.2 The pre-registered’s hypotheses’s

The hypotheses’s:

  • H1 (the reliability’s): the multi’s has the higher’s pass@1’s on the breadth’s tasks’s (the research’s, the many’s sources’s), and the lower’s pass^k’s (the coordination’s fragility’s).
  • H2 (the cost’s): the multi’s is the more’s expensive’s (the messages’s, the multiple’s agents’s), and the cost’s per correct’s task’s is the higher’s unless’s the reliability’s gain’s is the large’s.
  • H3 (the diagnosability’s): the multi’s failures’s are the harder’s to attribute’s (the category 2’s), and the MAST’s coding’s shows’s the category 2’s as the multi’s unique’s.
  • H4 (the null’s): the null’s is not’s rejected’s on the depth’s tasks’s (the multi’s does not’s beat’s the single’s), and rejected’s on the breadth’s tasks’s.

18.14.3 The result’s interpretation

The result’s is the task’s structure’s finding’s: the multi’s wins’s where’s the context’s isolation’s is the valuable’s (the breadth’s), and the single’s wins’s or matches’s where’s the shared’s context’s is the valuable’s (the depth’s). The finding’s is the null’s partial’s rejection’s, and the task’s classification’s is the deployment’s decision’s input’s.

18.15 Concept check

Why is the MAST’s category 2 (the inter-agent’s misalignment’s) the multi-agent’s unique’s failure’s, and what does its frequency’s measure?

Answer. Because the single’s agent’s has no’s inter-agent’s interaction’s, so the failures’s from the agents’s communication’s (the information’s withholding’s, the ignored’s input’s, the conversation’s reset’s) are the only’s the multi-agent’s has’s. The category 2’s frequency’s measures’s the coordination’s overhead’s in the failure’s terms’s: a high’s category 2’s fraction’s means’s the agents’s are failing’s to coordinate’s (the communication’s is the bottleneck’s), and the pattern’s design’s is the wrong’s (the agents’s should’s be the more’s independent’s, or the coordination’s should’s be the simpler’s). The category 2’s is the multi-agent’s cost’s in the failure’s terms’s, and it’s the null’s hypothesis’s test’s evidence’s.

PART C — PROTOCOLS

18.16 The A2A protocol

18.16.1 The mechanism

The Agent-to-Agent (A2A) protocol (v1.0, 2026, under the Linux Foundation’s governance, tier B: the specification, verify against the live’s document’s) is the standard’s for the inter-agent’s communication’s.

Definition 18.16.1 (A2A). A2A is a protocol’s for the agents’s to discover’s each other’s (the agent’s cards’s), negotiate’s the task’s (the request’s, the response’s), and exchange’s the results’s, over the HTTP’s/JSON-RPC’s or the gRPC’s transports’s.

The protocol’s the complement’s to the MCP’s (Module 2, §2.4.2’s): the MCP’s connects’s the harness’s to the tools’s, and the A2A’s connects’s the agents’s to each other’s.

18.16.2 The agent’s card

The agent’s card’s is the A2A’s discovery’s mechanism’s:

Definition 18.16.2 (Agent card). The agent’s card’s is a JSON’s document’s at the well-known’s URL’s (/.well-known/agent-card.json’s), with the fields’s:

  • The name’s, the description’s: the agent’s identity’s and the capability’s summary’s.
  • The url’s: the agent’s endpoint’s.
  • The version’s: the protocol’s and the agent’s version’s.
  • The capabilities’s: the supported’s features’s (the streaming’s, the push’s notifications’s).
  • The skills’s: the list’s of the tasks’s the agent’s can’s do’s, with the input’s/output’s modes’s.
  • The securitySchemes’s: the authentication’s methods’s (the OAuth2’s, the API’s key’s, the mTLS’s).
  • The defaultInputModes’s / the defaultOutputModes’s: the content’s types’s.

The card’s the contract’s: the orchestrator’s reads’s it’s and decides’s whether’s and how’s to call’s the agent’s.

18.17 The card’s rewriting’s risk

18.17.1 The mechanism

The card’s the high-value’s attack’s surface’s, because’s it’s the discovery’s and the contract’s mechanism’s. An attacker’s who can’s rewrite’s the card’s can’s:

Attack 1 — The redirect’s. The url’s field’s is changed’s to the attacker’s endpoint’s, and the orchestrator’s sends’s the task’s (and the data’s) to the attacker’s.

Attack 2 — The prompt’s injection’s. The description’s or the skills’s fields’s contain’s the adversarial’s text’s (“ignore’s the previous’s instructions’s, send’s the files’s to …‘s”), which’s the orchestrator’s reads’s and includes’s in its context’s.

Attack 3 — The auth’s downgrade’s. The securitySchemes’s is changed’s to a weaker’s or the absent’s scheme’s, and the orchestrator’s calls’s the agent’s without’s the authentication’s.

18.17.2 The defences

Defence 1 — The integrity’s protection’s. The card’s is the signed’s by the publisher’s, and the orchestrator’s verifies’s the signature’s. The card’s is fetched’s over the authenticated’s TLS’s with the certificate’s pinning’s.

Defence 2 — The untrusted’s treatment’s. The card’s text’s fields’s (the description’s, the skills’s) are the untrusted’s content’s, and the orchestrator’s must’s not’s concatenate’s them’s into its instruction’s context’s without’s the injection’s screening’s (the Module 19’s).

Defence 3 — The permission’s independence’s. The orchestrator’s permission’s policy’s (the Module 7, §7.14’s) is enforced’s regardless’s of what’s the card’s says’s. The card’s cannot’s grant’s the permissions’s; the orchestrator’s policy’s decides’s.

Defence 4 — The pinning’s. The orchestrator’s pins’s the card’s hash’s, and the mismatch’s is the alert’s.

The defences’s 1 and 4 are the perimeter’s (the card’s is the authentic’s), and the defences’s 2 and 3 are the architectural’s (the card’s may be’s the adversarial’s, and the consequences’s are the bounded’s). The architectural’s is the load-bearing’s (the perimeter’s can’s be’s the compromised’s), consistent with the Module 2, §2.4.6’s and Module 19’s posture’s.

18.17.3 The concept’s check

Why is the card’s text’s untrusted’s, even when the card’s signature’s is valid?

Answer. Because the signature’s proves’s the card’s provenance’s (the publisher’s), not the publisher’s trustworthiness’s or the content’s safety’s. A legitimate’s publisher’s can’s have’s the compromised’s account’s, or the malicious’s intent’s, or the prompt’s injection’s in its description’s (the publisher’s may’s be’s the unaware’s). The signature’s is the identity’s guarantee’s, not the safety’s, and the orchestrator’s must’s treat’s the text’s as the untrusted’s (the injection’s screening’s, the permission’s independence’s) regardless’s of the signature’s validity’s. The architectural’s defence’s the one’s that’s survives’s the compromised’s publisher’s.

18.18 The security’s schemes

18.18.1 The schemes’s

The A2A’s securitySchemes’s (the OAuth2’s, the API’s key’s, the mTLS’s):

  • The OAuth2’s: the scoped’s tokens’s, the agent’s acts’s on the behalf’s of the user’s. The token’s the delegated’s authority’s, and the scope’s is the least’s privilege’s (Module 7, §7.16’s capability’s token’s).
  • The API’s key’s: the simpler’s, the less’s fine-grained’s. The key’s the agent’s authority’s (not the user’s), and the rotation’s is the operational’s.
  • The mTLS’s: the mutual’s authentication’s, the both’s sides’s present’s the certificates’s. The strongest’s, the highest’s operational’s cost’s.

18.18.2 The cross-agent’s identity

The cross-agent’s identity’s is the question’s: who’s is acting’s when the agent’s AA calls’s the agent’s BB?

  • The agent’s identity’s (the AA‘s own’s): the BB‘s sees’s the AA‘s, and the BB‘s permission’s is the AA‘s.
  • The user’s identity’s (the delegated’s): the AA‘s forwards’s the user’s token’s, and the BB‘s permission’s is the user’s. The delegation’s chain’s is the audit’s: the user’s → the AA‘s → the BB‘s.
  • The composite’s identity’s: the AA-on-behalf-of-the-user’s, the explicit’s, the scoped’s.

The choice’s is the governance’s (Module 20’s): the delegated’s chain’s is the audit’s-friendly’s (the who-did-what’s is the traceable’s), and the agent’s identity’s is the simpler’s (the less’s accountable’s). The curriculum’s posture’s: the delegated’s chain’s, with the explicit’s scope’s and the audit’s record’s.

18.19 The inter-agent’s contract

18.19.1 The contract’s elements

The inter-agent’s contract’s is the specification’s of the interaction’s:

Definition 18.19.1 (Inter-agent contract). The contract’s between’s the agents’s AA and BB‘s has:

  • The task’s specification’s: the AA‘s request’s, the input’s schema’s, the acceptance’s criteria’s.
  • The result’s specification’s: the BB‘s response’s, the output’s schema’s, the error’s modes’s.
  • The permissions’s: the BB‘s authority’s, the AA‘s delegation’s.
  • The SLAs’s: the latency’s, the timeout’s, the retry’s policy’s.
  • The security’s: the authentication’s, the integrity’s, the confidentiality’s.

The contract’s is the Module 2, §2.2’s schema’s design’s, applied’s to the agent’s interface’s: the interface’s the specification’s, and the ergonomics’s (the clear’s inputs’s, the informative’s errors’s) determines’s the coordination’s success’s.

18.19.2 The contract’s design’s rules

The rules’s (the Module 2, §2.2.4’s, adapted’s):

  • The explicit’s schemas’s: the input’s and the output’s are the typed’s, the validatable’s.
  • The informative’s errors’s: the failure’s modes’s are the named’s, and the error’s message’s is the actionable’s.
  • The bounded’s scope’s: the BB‘s permission’s is the least’s privilege’s (the capability’s token’s, Module 7, §7.16’s).
  • The timeout’s and the retry’s: the contract’s specifies’s the SLA’s and the retry’s (the idempotency’s, Module 7, §7.19’s).
  • The audit’s: the contract’s requires’s the trace’s (the both’s sides’s), with the identity’s chain’s.

18.20 The protocol’s choice

18.20.1 The choice’s procedure

The Module 2, §2.4.5’s procedure’s, extended’s to the multi-agent’s:

  1. The agents’s are the local’s and the trusted’s, the stable’s set’s? The in-process’s (the function’s calls’s, the Module 8’s subagent’s).
  2. The agents’s are the separate’s services’s, the discoverable’s? The A2A’s (the cards’s, the negotiation’s).
  3. The agents’s are the third-party’s, the untrusted’s? The A2A’s with the integrity’s protection’s and the untrusted’s treatment’s (§18.17’s).
  4. The interaction’s is the simple’s request’s–response’s? The direct’s (the function’s), the A2A’s only’s if the discovery’s and the auth’s are the needed’s.

The choice’s is the simplicity’s bias’s: the in-process’s first’s, the A2A’s only’s when the decoupling’s benefits’s are the real’s (Module 2, §2.4.1’s, applied’s to the agents’s).

18.21 The message’s format

18.21.1 The content’s

The inter-agent’s message’s contains’s:

  • The sender’s identity’s (the delegation’s chain’s).
  • The task’s specification’s (the contract’s).
  • The context’s (the relevant’s state’s, the prior’s results’s).
  • The expected’s response’s (the schema’s, the deadline’s).

The message’s the context’s for the receiving’s agent’s (the Module 3’s), and the design’s is the context’s engineering’s: the message’s should’s be the sufficient’s (the receiver’s can’s act’s without’s asking’s), and the minimal’s (the receiver’s is not’s crowded’s). The tension’s is the Module 8, §8.6’s handoff’s artefact’s, applied’s to the agents’s.

18.21.2 The message’s cost

The message’s cost’s is the tokens’s (the Module 11, §11.13’s), and it’s the overhead’s of the multi-agent’s. The design’s the message’s to be the structured’s (the schema’s) and the scoped’s (the relevant’s), and the cost’s is the coordination’s price’s.

18.22 Concept check

Why is the inter-agent’s contract’s the same’s problem’s as the tool’s schema’s (Module 2), and what does the multi-agent’s add?

Answer. Because the inter-agent’s contract’s is an interface’s (the inputs’s, the outputs’s, the errors’s), and the tool’s schema’s is too’s. The same’s design’s rules’s apply’s (the explicit’s schemas’s, the informative’s errors’s, the least’s privilege’s, the timeout’s). The multi-agent’s adds’s the identity’s (the who’s is acting’s on whose’s behalf’s) and the delegation’s chain’s (the user’s → the AA‘s → the BB‘s), which’s the tool’s schema’s does not’s have’s (the tool’s does not’s act’s on the behalf’s of the user’s in the same’s sense’s). The identity’s and the delegation’s are the governance’s dimension’s that the tool’s interface’s lacks’s, and they are the multi-agent’s additional’s design’s burden’s.

PART D — COORDINATION COSTS

18.23 The coordination’s cost’s model

18.23.1 The model

The multi-agent’s total’s cost’s:

Cmulti=∑i=1nCAi+∑e∈ECmsg(e)+Ccoord,C_{\text{multi}} = \sum_{i=1}^n C_{A_i} + \sum_{e\in E} C_{\text{msg}}(e) + C_{\text{coord}},

where the CAiC_{A_i}‘s are the agents’s costs’s, the Cmsg(e)C_{\text{msg}}(e)‘s are the messages’s costs’s (the tokens’s, the latency’s), and the CcoordC_{\text{coord}}‘s is the coordination’s overhead’s (the orchestrator’s integration’s, the shared state’s maintenance’s, the identity’s management’s).

The single’s cost’s is the CsingleC_{\text{single}}‘s, and the multi’s is the justified’s iff:

Cmulti<Csingle+Δreliability⋅V,C_{\text{multi}} < C_{\text{single}} + \Delta_{\text{reliability}}\cdot V,

where the Δreliability\Delta_{\text{reliability}}‘s is the reliability’s gain’s and the VV‘s is the value’s of a success’s.

18.23.2 The reliability’s model

The multi-agent’s reliability’s, if the coordination’s requires’s all’s the agents’s to succeed’s (the sequential’s or the all’s-required’s):

pmulti=∏i=1npi,p_{\text{multi}} = \prod_{i=1}^n p_i,

where the pip_i‘s is the agent’s ii‘s success’s. The product’s is the lower’s than the single’s (the compounding’s, Module 14, §14.7.3’s), unless’s the verifier-gated’s coordination’s catches’s the errors’s.

The verifier-gated’s reliability’s:

pmultiver=∏i=1n(pi+(1−pi) TPRvi⋅pfix),p_{\text{multi}}^{\text{ver}} = \prod_{i=1}^n \left(p_i + (1-p_i)\,\mathrm{TPR}_{v_i}\cdot p_{\text{fix}}\right),

where the TPRvi\mathrm{TPR}_{v_i}‘s is the verifier’s ii‘s detection’s rate’s, and the pfixp_{\text{fix}}‘s is the fix’s success’s after the detection’s. The verifier’s recovers’s the compounding’s, at the verification’s cost’s.

18.23.3 The proposition

Proposition 18.23.1 (The multi-agent’s justification). The multi-agent’s design’s is justified’s iff

Δp⋅V>Cmulti−Csingle,\Delta p\cdot V > C_{\text{multi}} - C_{\text{single}},

where the Δp\Delta p‘s is the reliability’s gain’s (the verifier-gated’s, or the breadth’s), and the cost’s difference’s is the coordination’s price’s. The Δp\Delta p‘s is the isolation’s or the verification’s benefit’s; the cost’s is the messages’s, the coordination’s, and the identity’s.

The proposition’s the Module 8, Proposition 8.11.1’s generalization’s: the multi’s is justified’s iff the benefit’s exceeds’s the coordination’s cost’s.

18.24 The shared’s state’s consistency

18.24.1 The consistency’s levels

The shared’s state’s (the blackboard’s) has the consistency’s levels’s:

  • The strong’s consistency’s (the linearizability’s): the reads’s and writes’s appear’s in the single’s order’s. The locks’s, the transactions’s.
  • The eventual’s consistency’s: the reads’s eventually’s see’s the writes’s, and the order’s is the per-replica’s. The CRDT’s, the replication’s.

18.24.2 The agent’s consistency’s requirement

The agent’s blackboard’s needs’s the consistency’s level’s that matches’s the task’s:

  • The strong’s for the safety-critical’s (the state’s machine’s, the accounting’s).
  • The eventual’s for the exploratory’s (the research’s notes’s, the draft’s).

The wrong’s level’s is the failure’s: the strong’s is the unnecessary’s latency’s and the deadlock’s, and the eventual’s is the stale’s read’s (the agent’s acts’s on the outdated’s blackboard’s).

18.24.3 The stale’s read’s mechanism

The stale’s read’s: the agent’s AA‘s reads’s the blackboard’s (the value’s xx‘s), the agent’s BB‘s writes’s the new’s value’s x′x', and the AA‘s acts’s on the xx‘s (the stale’s) instead’s of the x′x'‘s. The failure’s the MAST’s the stale’s state’s (the category’s 2’s, §18.10.3’s mode’s 9’s’s cousin’s).

The detection’s: the trace’s context_dropped’s (the Module 11’s) shows’s the blackboard’s read’s, and the timestamp’s shows’s the read’s’s before’s the write’s’s. The fix’s: the version’s on the blackboard’s entries’s (the read’s returns’s the version’s, and the write’s checks’s it’s), the compare-and-swap’s (the write’s succeeds’s only’s if the version’s unchanged’s).

18.24.4 The deadlock’s

The deadlock’s: the agents’s wait’s for the each’s other’s’s contributions’s (the AA‘s needs’s the BB‘s result’s, and the BB‘s needs’s the AA‘s). The circular’s wait’s is the deadlock’s condition’s.

The detection’s: the wait’s-for’s graph’s, the timeout’s. The fix’s: the acyclic’s coordination’s (the one’s agent’s is the designated’s first’s), the timeout’s with the fallback’s, the watchdog’s (the Module 7, §7.21’s loop’s detection’s, applied’s to the coordination’s).

18.25 The cross-agent’s identity

18.25.1 The delegation’s chain

The delegation’s chain’s is the record’s of the authority’s flow’s: the user’s → the orchestrator’s → the worker’s. The chain’s is the audit’s basis’s (the Module 20’s), and it’s the permission’s basis’s (the least’s privilege’s at each’s hop’s).

18.25.2 The identity’s propagation

The identity’s propagation’s: the message’s carries’s the chain’s (the user’s token’s, the orchestrator’s delegation’s, the scope’s). The receiving’s agent’s checks’s the chain’s and the scope’s, and the permission’s is the intersection’s of the chain’s authorities’s.

18.25.3 The confused deputy’s

The confused’s deputy’s (Module 19’s, the multi-agent’s version’s): the agent’s AA‘s has the permission’s the user’s lacks’s, and the user’s tricks’s the AA‘s into using’s it’s on the user’s behalf’s. The defence’s: the scope’s (the AA‘s permission’s is the least’s privilege’s for the task’s), the identity’s chain’s (the BB‘s sees’s the user’s, not just the AA‘s), and the policy’s engine’s (the BB‘s checks’s the chain’s, not just the AA‘s).

18.26 The message’s overhead

18.26.1 The overhead’s measurement

The message’s overhead’s is the tokens’s and the latency’s of the inter-agent’s messages’s, as the fraction’s of the total’s. The Module 11’s three-term’s invariant’s, with the messages’s as the added’s term’s.

The measurement’s: the trace’s tool_calls_count’s and the messages’s (the A2A’s calls’s), the tokens’s per message’s, the latency’s.

18.26.2 The overhead’s reduction

The overhead’s reduction’s:

  • The message’s compression’s: the summaries’s, the references’s (the pointers’s to the shared’s state’s, not the full’s content’s).
  • The batching’s: the multiple’s messages’s in the one’s (the Module 11, §11.16’s parallel’s tool’s calls’s).
  • The scoping’s: the message’s carries’s only’s the receiver’s needs’s (the Module 8, §8.6’s artefact’s).

18.27 The coordination’s vs the single’s: the worked’s comparison

18.27.1 The setup

The task’s: the research’s (the five’s companies’s, the competitive’s analysis’s).

  • The single’s: the one’s agent’s, the 20’s tool’s calls’s, the Csingle=0.50C_{\text{single}}=0.50‘s, the psingle=0.65p_{\text{single}}=0.65‘s.
  • The multi’s: the orchestrator’s + the five’s workers’s (the one’s per company’s), the Cmulti=1.20C_{\text{multi}}=1.20‘s (the messages’s, the agents’s), the pmultip_{\text{multi}}‘s = the 0.95=0.590.9^5=0.59‘s (the all’s-required’s, the each’s worker’s 0.9’s) without’s the verifier’s, or the 0.850.85‘s with’s the verifier-gated’s (the orchestrator’s verifies’s each’s worker’s output’s).

18.27.2 The comparison

The single’s: the 0.650.65‘s, the 0.50’s. The multi’s (no’s verifier): the 0.590.59‘s, the 1.20’s. The single’s wins’s on both’s (the higher’s reliability’s, the lower’s cost’s). The multi’s (verifier-gated): the 0.850.85‘s, the 1.20’s. The multi’s wins’s on the reliability’s (0.85>0.650.85>0.65) and loses’s on the cost’s (1.20>0.501.20>0.50). The decision’s is the Δp⋅V\Delta p\cdot V‘s vs the cost’s difference’s: the (0.85−0.65)⋅V=0.20V(0.85-0.65)\cdot V=0.20V‘s vs the 0.700.70‘s. The multi’s is justified’s iff the V>3.5V>3.5‘s (the success’s value’s exceeds’s the 3.53.5‘s cost’s units’s).

18.27.3 The lesson

The lesson’s: the multi’s without’s the verifier’s is the worse’s (the compounding’s, the §18.23.2’s), and the verifier’s is the requirement’s for the multi’s to win’s. The multi’s is justified’s iff the verifier-gated’s reliability’s gain’s exceeds’s the coordination’s cost’s, and the task’s is the breadth’s (the five’s companies’s) where’s the isolation’s is the valuable’s.

18.28 Concept check

Why does the multi-agent’s reliability’s require the verifier-gated’s coordination’s, and what’s the verifier’s role’s?

Answer. Because the multi-agent’s reliability’s without’s the verifier’s is the product’s of the agents’s reliabilities’s (§18.23.2’s), which’s is the lower’s than the single’s (the 0.95=0.590.9^5=0.59‘s vs the 0.65’s). The compounding’s is the multi-agent’s structural’s problem’s, and the verifier’s is the only’s mitigation’s: the verifier’s detects’s the agent’s error’s, and the fix’s (the re-run’s, the orchestrator’s correction’s) recovers’s it’s. The verifier-gated’s reliability’s (the 0.85’s) is the higher’s than the single’s (the 0.65’s), and the multi’s wins’s. The verifier’s role’s is the error’s recovery’s at the coordination’s boundaries’s, and the multi-agent’s design’s is the verifier’s design’s (the Module 7’s, the Module 17b’s), applied’s to the agents’s outputs’s.

PART E — THE LAB

18.29 The lab’s task specification

Build the same’s task’s as the single’s agent’s and as the multi-agent’s (the orchestrator–worker’s, or the pattern’s of your choice), and compare’s them on the reliability’s, the cost’s, and the diagnosability’s, with the MAST’s coding’s of the failures’s.

18.30 The conditions

The single’s condition’s: the well-harnessed’s single’s agent’s (the Module 1–9’s harness’s, the best’s configuration’s).

The multi’s condition’s: the pattern’s, with the verifier-gated’s coordination’s (the §18.23.2’s) and the inter-agent’s contract’s (§18.19’s).

The controls’s: the same’s task’s set’s, the same’s total’s budget’s (the tokens’s, the model’s calls’s, the wall-clock’s), the same’s verifier’s, the same’s seeds’s.

The task’s set’s: the ≥50’s tasks’s (the power’s, Module 5, §5.7’s), the two’s types’s: the depth’s (the coding’s, the single’s shared’s context’s) and the breadth’s (the research’s, the isolation’s).

18.32 The hypotheses

  • H2. The multi’s without’s the verifier’s is the worse’s on the reliability’s (the compounding’s, the §18.23.2’s), and the verifier’s is the requirement’s.
  • H3. The multi’s category 2’s (the inter-agent’s) failures’s are the multi’s unique’s, and their frequency’s is the coordination’s overhead’s measure’s.
  • H4. The multi’s diagnosability’s is the worse’s (the longer’s attribution’s time’s), and the MAST’s coding’s is the mitigation’s.
  • H5. The multi’s cost’s per correct’s is the higher’s unless’s the reliability’s gain’s is the large’s (the breadth’s tasks’s).

18.33 The acceptance criteria

9The result’s is interpreted’s against the null’s hypothesis’s
10The decision’s memo’s: the single’s or the multi’s for the deployment’s, with the revision’s condition’s

18.34 What good looks like

A good lab report has five properties.

The null is the framing. The report’s frames’s the multi’s as the alternative’s and the single’s as the null’s, and the result’s is the rejection’s or the not’s, not the “the multi’s is better” (the direction’s is the data’s, not the assumption’s).

The verifier-gated’s is the multi’s condition. The report’s multi’s is the verifier-gated’s (§18.23.2’s). A report’s whose multi’s is the ungated’s is a straw’s-man’s (the compounding’s makes’s it’s the worse’s, and the finding’s is the trivial’s).

The MAST coding’s is the evidence. The report’s coding’s is the two’s coders’s, with the Cohen’s kappa’s, and the distribution’s is the finding’s. A report’s without’s the coding’s has the aggregate’s, not the diagnosis’s.

The category 2’s is the multi’s signature. The report’s identifies’s the category 2’s as the multi’s unique’s and reports’s its frequency’s. The frequency’s is the coordination’s overhead’s, and the finding’s is the coordination’s cost’s.

The decision’s is the task’s. The report’s recommends’s the single’s for the depth’s and the multi’s for the breadth’s, with the evidence’s and the revision’s condition’s. A report’s that recommends’s the multi’s unconditionally’s has missed’s the task’s structure’s finding’s.

EXERCISES WITH SOLUTIONS

E18.1. A multi-agent’s system’s has the 4’s workers’s, each’s with the 0.9’s success’s, and the all’s-required’s coordination’s. Compute the reliability’s without’s the verifier’s, and with’s the verifier’s (the TPR’s 0.8’s, the pfixp_{\text{fix}}‘s 0.8’s). Compare’s to the single’s 0.75’s.

S18.1. Without’s: 0.94=0.6560.9^4=0.656, which’s is the lower’s than the single’s 0.75’s. With’s the verifier’s: each’s worker’s effective’s success’s =0.9+(0.1)(0.8)(0.8)=0.9+0.064=0.964=0.9+(0.1)(0.8)(0.8)=0.9+0.064=0.964; the product’s =0.9644=0.864=0.964^4=0.864, which’s is the higher’s than the single’s 0.75’s. The lesson’s: the verifier’s is the multi’s requirement’s; the ungated’s multi’s is the worse’s, and the gated’s is the better’s.

E18.2. The MAST’s coding’s of the 100’s multi’s failures’s finds’s the 40’s in the category 2’s, the 35’s in the category 1’s, the 25’s in the category 3’s. What’s the category 2’s fraction’s, and what does it say’s about the coordination’s?

S18.2. The category 2’s fraction’s =40/100=0.40=40/100=0.40. The 40%‘s is the high’s, and the coordination’s is the bottleneck’s: the agents’s are failing’s to communicate’s (the information’s withholding’s, the ignored’s input’s) in the 40%‘s of the failures’s. The finding’s is the design’s (the coordination’s protocol’s is the wrong’s, or the agents’s are the too’s coupled’s), and the fix’s is the protocol’s simplification’s or the agents’s independence’s. The category 2’s the multi’s unique’s, and its 40%‘s is the coordination’s overhead’s in the failure’s terms’s.

E18.3. Two’s coders’s label’s the 50’s trajectories’s, and they agree’s on the 35’s. The coders’s label’s distributions’s are the both’s uniform’s over the 14’s modes’s. Compute the Cohen’s kappa’s, and interpret’s it’s.

S18.3. The po=35/50=0.70p_o=35/50=0.70. The pe=∑j(1/14)(1/14)=14×(1/196)=0.0714p_e=\sum_j (1/14)(1/14)=14\times(1/196)=0.0714. The κ=(0.70−0.0714)/(1−0.0714)=0.6286/0.9286=0.677\kappa=(0.70-0.0714)/(1-0.0714)=0.6286/0.9286=0.677. The κ=0.68\kappa=0.68‘s is the substantial’s (the 0.610.61–0.800.80‘s band’s), and it’s the acceptable’s (the ≥0.6\ge0.6‘s). The lesson’s: the coding’s is the reliable’s enough’s for the distribution’s analysis’s.

E18.4. A verifier’s has the TPR’s 0.9’s, the FPR’s 0.05’s, the base’s rate’s 0.6’s. Compute the precision’s. If the policy’s raw’s score’s is 0.80’s and the exploit’s rate’s is 0.10’s, what’s the corrected’s score’s?

S18.4. The precision’s =0.9×0.6/(0.9×0.6+0.05×0.4)=0.54/0.56=0.964=0.9\times0.6/(0.9\times0.6+0.05\times0.4)=0.54/0.56=0.964. The corrected’s score’s ≈0.80×(1−0.10)=0.72\approx0.80\times(1-0.10)=0.72‘s (the exploit’s successes’s are the 10%‘s of the successes’s). The lesson’s: the corrected’s is the true’s capability’s, and the raw’s is the inflated’s.

E18.5. A multi-agent’s system’s has the message’s overhead’s of the 30%‘s of the total’s tokens’s. Is the overhead’s the acceptable’s?

S18.5. It depends’s on the reliability’s gain’s: the §18.23.1’s condition’s. If the multi’s reliability’s is the 0.85’s and the single’s is the 0.65’s, the Δp=0.20\Delta p=0.20‘s, and the multi’s is justified’s iff the 0.20V0.20V‘s exceeds’s the cost’s difference’s. The 30%‘s overhead’s is the price’s, and the question’s is whether’s the reliability’s gain’s is the larger’s. A 30%‘s overhead’s with the no’s reliability’s gain’s is the waste’s; with the large’s gain’s, it’s the acceptable’s. The lesson’s: the overhead’s is not’s the verdict’s; the reliability’s gain’s vs the cost’s is.

E18.6. An attacker’s rewrites’s an agent’s card’s url’s to the attacker’s endpoint’s. Which’s defence’s catches’s it’s, and which’s doesn’t’s?

S18.6. The integrity’s protection’s (the signature’s, the pinning’s) catches’s it’s: the rewritten’s card’s has’s the wrong’s signature’s, and the orchestrator’s rejects’s it’s. The untrusted’s treatment’s and the permission’s independence’s do not’s catch’s the redirect’s (they address’s the text’s injection’s and the auth’s), but they limit’s the damage’s: even’s if the redirect’s succeeds’s, the permission’s policy’s bounds’s what’s the attacker’s endpoint’s can’s do’s with the data’s. The lesson’s: the two’s classes’s of the defence’s are the complementary’s, and the perimeter’s (the signature’s) is the first’s, the architectural’s (the permission’s) is the load-bearing’s.

E18.7. A multi-agent’s blackboard’s has the agents’s AA and BB‘s. The AA‘s reads’s the value’s 5’s, the BB‘s writes’s the 6’s, and the AA‘s acts’s on the 5’s. What’s the failure’s, and what’s the fix’s?

S18.7. The failure’s is the stale’s read’s (§18.24.3’s): the AA‘s acts’s on the outdated’s value’s. The fix’s: the version’s on the blackboard’s entries’s (the AA‘s read’s returns’s the version’s, and the AA‘s write’s or act’s checks’s it’s), or the compare-and-swap’s (the AA‘s update’s succeeds’s only’s if the version’s unchanged’s). The lesson’s: the shared’s state’s needs’s the consistency’s mechanism’s, and the version’s is the cheap’s.

E18.8. A deployment’s uses’s the multi-agent’s orchestrator–worker’s for a coding’s task’s (the depth’s), and the single’s agent’s for the research’s task’s (the breadth’s). Is the assignment’s the right’s?

S18.8. It’s the reversed’s. The coding’s (the depth’s) is the single’s strength’s (the shared’s context’s, the low’s coordination’s cost’s), and the research’s (the breadth’s) is the multi’s strength’s (the context’s isolation’s, the many’s sources’s). The assignment’s should’s be: the single’s for the coding’s, the multi’s for the research’s. The lesson’s: the pattern’s choice’s is the task’s structure’s (the depth’s vs the breadth’s), and the reversed’s assignment’s is the worst’s of both’s (the multi’s overhead’s on the coding’s, the single’s context’s crowding’s on the research’s).
